Andras Schiff's Bach

Just got this set from Amazon.de! Schiff has been concentrating on Bach for a number of years, and I am glad that I finally own a set by him that covers all the solo keyboard works of Bach. Hardly available anywhere else at a reasonable price!

I got some of his CDs too, but someone burn for me (sorry!), i don't know what is the cover.

As I ususally listen to Glenn Gound played Bach, he is much "crazy" in some pieces, then I listen to Andras Schiff, very comfortable.

Glenn Gould is unique in his Bach's interpretation - nobody played it like he did. I also have Gould's Bach in a set. Very different, but full of sparks. You don't feel like listening to Bach.

Yes, but the set is not available in Hong Kong. You have to get it from the internet stores. Even so, the price is sky high.

For me Andreas Schiff is only good to piano students. Boring stuff to listen, especially it's played on piano. Glenn Gould is good, but very idiosyncractic. His recent venture on ECM is much more adventurous. I really hope Hyperion would issue a box set of Angela Hewitt's Bach stuff - she's now the queen of Bach on piano! Andrei Gavrilov can be both exciting and relaxed, such as his Goldberg and WTC.

How about Bach on harpsichord? Take a look of a French harpsichordist called Pierre Hanta? and he could often extract the exceptional qualities in Bach's music, better than others. Chrisopher Rousset is also fine. Unless you're into historical recordings, avoid Landowska.

I think Schiff is a very safe choice for Bach - you will never be surprised. I agree that he is not THE choice - I like his English suites, Well Tempered Clavier, but others like Hewitt, or even Edwin Fischer, are also excellent versions. I don't like Gavrilov. For Partitas, I have yet to identify a version that touches me (may be Roberts?). For Two-part inventions, I simply don't know any good version! Anybody?

I must agree, that Schiff is safe, but definitely not boring. In case of Bach's partitas try Piotr Anderszewski version. It really got me.
